  • Canadian Colleges

    Colleges in Canada

    Canadian Colleges

Colleges in Canada are similar to vocational institutes in Iran and often focus on preparing students to enter labor market. So, the focus is more on functional and operational aspect of subjects than their theoretical aspect in comparison with universities. College programs of Canada are recommended to individuals who want to enter labor market early and have a job with medium income and higher function. Some colleges’ programs include apprenticeship providing students an opportunity to develop their work relationships and experiences before completing their education. This also promotes their employment chance after graduation. Terms of admission in Canadian colleges are easier than those of universities and generally require less prerequisites. Moreover, required language score for admission in Canadian colleges is lower than that for universities.

Colleges of Canada are categorized in two categories: public and private colleges. Following programs are provided in colleges:

    • DEC program (Diploma of College Studies): this program is provided in colleges of Québec and you should have high school diploma to enter this program.
    • Diploma program (requires having high school diploma and pre-university degree)
    • Certificate program (requires having high school diploma)
    • Post Bachelor program (requires bachelor degree)
    • Bachelor program (it is the same as bachelor degree and requires having high school diploma and pre-university degree)

For some colleges the least IELTS score must be 6 and if a student doesn’t have a language degree, he/she must complete language programs as a prerequisite of main program. Many colleges offer an opportunity to students to prove their language ability in English or French through an online test.

What is important here is that entering the main program requires having a language degree, so students without a language degree must complete language program. Generally, embassy of Canada doesn’t accept application of Iranian students who don’t have a language degree. Accordingly, we recommend you to take a language test and achieve the required language level if you apply directly from Iran, even if the university you want to apply doesn’t require a language degree for admission.

Canadian college tuition is between $10000 and $20000 in a year. Range of costs depends on college, program and classes. Besides college tuition fees, there are also costs of health insurance and living costs in Canada which you most include in your list of educational costs.

According to rules, there is no age limitation for university or college admission or for getting student visa in Canada. However, it should be noted that officers of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada obviously consider the age in evaluating cases of applicants and their educational program must be justified for officer in relation with their situation. For instance, if an applicant is 50 and wants to study in a Canadian college, it is hard for her/him to justify and convince the officer with her/his documents about that her/his only intention for application is to further education and then come back to her/his country.

Family members of applicant of education in a Canadian college can get a visitor or work (employment) visa and her/his children can benefit free education in Canada.

Gaining admission to further education in Canada, particularly if the applicant wants to get permanent residency after graduation, is a specialized job and we recommend you to benefit our qualified consultors before taking any action.

    • Scholarship in Canada

      Scholarship in Canada

       Scholarship in Canada

Canadian universities and colleges offer a variety of scholarships and funds to international students. So, it is very important for students to know these scholarships. Information related to receive a scholarship is one aspect of such knowledge and competing rivals to receive it, about whom there is no information, is another aspect.  These scholarships are offered based on the educational situation of applicants and they are normally provided by public resources, private companies or universities themselves.

In order to receive a scholarship in Canada, students need to have eligible educational records including high GPA, valid academic papers, and sometimes a proper English or GRE score. Another important point is that any university, department or a professor have limited resources to give funds and only limited number of students can dominate their rivals in receiving these funds.

It is very difficult to get a scholarship for a bachelor program in Canada and if such a scholarship is offered, it will be limited to a discount in tuition fee based on students’ educational conditions and their voluntary educational and non-educational works. It is possible to get scholarships for research based master’s programs but generally universities don’t offer scholarships for course based master’s programs. Students can get a scholarship in doctoral programs if they are eligible and its amount depends on different factors such as fund of university, the money given to the supervisor by research institutes. And the fund she/he assigns for each project and student as well as student’s educational records and competency.

To receive consultancy about getting a scholarship in Canada, send your educational resume to Ramoon to be evaluated by our experts. Work Permit after Graduation in Canada

Post-Graduate Work Permit Program in Canada:

Students graduated from institutes in Canada can apply for post-graduate work permit program (PGWPP) or work permit (or work visa). This program is offered to individuals who have high school diploma and higher level degrees to stay in Canada and have work experience there. The work experience achieved through this program can be used as a score in application for permanent residency. Graduating and applying for PGWPP (post-graduate work visa), the applicant can work full time. Work permit allows applicant to work in any company or job and with any employee. There is no limitation for work hours and applicant is not limited to a certain employee or job and he/she can change her/his job. The applicants don’t need to have a job offer at the time of applying for work permit.

Deadline for Applying for Post-Graduate Work Permit in Canada

According to the last website update of Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada, Canadian universities’ graduates have 180 days  to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit after graduation in Canada (formerly this time was 90 days).

A very important point here is that the applicant need to apply for this permit when her/his permission documents are valid not expired. Generally, universities and colleges give a letter to students at the end of any program stating that this person can begin to work in Canada if she/he wants. The time of receiving this letter is the best time to apply for a work permit. This is very important because immediately after graduation, the student is not allowed to work anymore unless she/he has applied for PGWPP.

During the time when the student has submitted her/his application for work permit to Immigration Refugee Citizenship Canada but the permit doesn’t issued yet, and she/he doesn’t have permit, she/he is in “Implied Status” in Canada.

Fortunately, a person in this status is allowed to work and her/his work will be acceptable in programs leading to permanent residency in Canada.

The Length of Work Post-Graduate Work Permit in Canada

A post-graduate work permit may be valid between 8 months and up to three years. The length of your permit will depend on the length of the study program you completed in Canada. The Length of post-graduate work permit based on length of study program is summarized as followings:

      • Programs shorter than 8 months are not eligible
      • 8 month to two year programs: two year work permit
      • two year programs and longer: three year work permit

Requirements for Application of Post-Graduate Work Permit

      • The applicant need to complete a program longer than 8 months as a full time student (except for last semester which is allowed to be part time or as academic absence) resulting in receiving a valid degree in Canada.
      • The applicant need to graduate from a public or private institute of higher education (which is working under rules and regulations similar to public institutes) or from a private secondary school or post-secondary school (post-high school) (in Québec) offering eligible programs for at least 900 hours or more resulting in receiving a diploma of vocational studies (DVS) degree or attestation of vocational specialization (AVS) degree, or from a private institute in Canada qualified to give an educational degree (such as bachelor, master’s or Ph.D. degree) to students.

A post-graduate work permit will be not issued for applicants who:

      • Completed a study program less than 8 months;
      • Attended in a Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship program which is not supported by Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada- DFATD;
