Admission and Spanish Student Visa

The first requirement to apply for a Spanish student visa is that you have an admission to a Spanish University acceptable for the government of Spain. This important subject will be detailed in other section. Once you got accepted, you must contact the consulate or embassy of Spain in your area and check out the necessary documents you need for the student visa application process. It is possible that the Spanish embassy in each country have its own rules depending on the regulation of the country. As can be noticed in a tour on internet, once you got your acceptance, you need to give your documents to the embassy and apply for your visa between two and three months before start of your program. You may have an interview at the embassy during this period. However, what may practically happen for applicants of a Spanish student visa in Iran will be very different and it may be hard to complete your application process and interview during two months in Iran. So, it is recommended that contact the embassy and check out the last situation and requirements before any proceeding for application.

As indicated in public websites of Spain, you must give the following documents along with your application to the embassy. However, this list is not absolute and the requirements may vary depending on each consulate or regulations of your home country. So, it is insistently emphasized again that contact the embassy before giving your documents.

1. Information of enrolment in a study program, schedule of courses and so on with details;
2. Health insurance;
3. Medical certificate indicating that you that any specific types of diseases (normally checked out by the embassy’s trusted physician)
4. Proof of financial ability during your study (proof of financial ability during on year is normally acceptable in other countries, but this duration and the amount may vary any time by the embassy of Spain in Iran;
5. Information about your accommodation in the destination country. For this purpose, it may be enough to book a hotel;
6. Criminal record certificate.

Important Note

After you entered Spain, you need to apply for residence permit within 30 days. This card will be valid for five years. If you have a residence card (permit) in Spain, an employer can apply for a “work permit” for you, then you will be allowed to work for 20 hours a week for that employer.  

Post-Graduate Work Permit

 Previously a student had to leave Spain after expiration of her/his student visa and completing study program. However, changing the rules, now a student have time to look for a job in relation with her/his education or start a business after graduation in Spain. To apply for a post-graduate work permit, you need to be graduated, have a health insurance for this time period, have financial ability for one year (opportunity to look for a job), and finally pay the application fee.

Canadian Colleges

Colleges in Canada are similar to vocational institutes in Iran and often focus on preparing students to enter labor market. So, the focus is more on functional and operational aspect of subjects than their theoretical aspect in comparison with universities. College programs of Canada are recommended to individuals who want to enter labor market early and have a job with medium income and higher function. Some colleges’ programs include apprenticeship providing students an opportunity to develop their work relationships and experiences before completing their education. This also promotes their employment chance after graduation. Terms of admission in Canadian colleges are easier than those of universities and generally require less prerequisites. Moreover, required language score for admission in Canadian colleges is lower than that for universities.

Colleges of Canada are categorized in two categories: public and private colleges. Following programs are provided in colleges:

• DEC program (Diploma of College Studies): this program is provided in colleges of Québec and you should have high school diploma to enter this program.
• Diploma program (requires having high school diploma and pre-university degree)
• Certificate program (requires having high school diploma)
• Post Bachelor program (requires bachelor degree)
• Bachelor program (it is the same as bachelor degree and requires having high school diploma and pre-university degree)

For some colleges the least IELTS score must be 6 and if a student doesn’t have a language degree, he/she must complete language programs as a prerequisite of main program. Many colleges offer an opportunity to students to prove their language ability in English or French through an online test.

What is important here is that entering the main program requires having a language degree, so students without a language degree must complete language program. Generally, embassy of Canada doesn’t accept application of Iranian students who don’t have a language degree. Accordingly, we recommend you to take a language test and achieve the required language level if you apply directly from Iran, even if the university you want to apply doesn’t require a language degree for admission.

Canadian college tuition is between $10000 and $20000 in a year. Range of costs depends on college, program and classes. Besides college tuition fees, there are also costs of health insurance and living costs in Canada which you most include in your list of educational costs.

 According to rules, there is no age limitation for university or college admission or for getting student visa in Canada. However, it should be noted that officers of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada obviously consider the age in evaluating cases of applicants and their educational program must be justified for officer in relation with their situation. For instance, if an applicant is 50 and wants to study in a Canadian college, it is hard for her/him to justify and convince the officer with her/his documents about that her/his only intention for application is to further education and then come back to her/his country.

Family members of applicant of education in a Canadian college can get a visitor or work (employment) visa and her/his children can benefit free education in Canada.

As you can see, the required language ability for application is included on the right of table. Generally, the required language levels is are very high and, as you can see, for some majors GRE score is required as well. Naturally, when a university is of high quality with very low fess, it will certainly put certain limitations and filters to attract the best students.
