Education

  • Canadian Colleges

    Colleges in Canada

    Canadian Colleges

Colleges in Canada are similar to vocational institutes in Iran and often focus on preparing students to enter labor market. So, the focus is more on functional and operational aspect of subjects than their theoretical aspect in comparison with universities. College programs of Canada are recommended to individuals who want to enter labor market early and have a job with medium income and higher function. Some colleges’ programs include apprenticeship providing students an opportunity to develop their work relationships and experiences before completing their education. This also promotes their employment chance after graduation. Terms of admission in Canadian colleges are easier than those of universities and generally require less prerequisites. Moreover, required language score for admission in Canadian colleges is lower than that for universities.

Colleges of Canada are categorized in two categories: public and private colleges. Following programs are provided in colleges:

    • DEC program (Diploma of College Studies): this program is provided in colleges of Québec and you should have high school diploma to enter this program.
    • Diploma program (requires having high school diploma and pre-university degree)
    • Certificate program (requires having high school diploma)
    • Post Bachelor program (requires bachelor degree)
    • Bachelor program (it is the same as bachelor degree and requires having high school diploma and pre-university degree)

For some colleges the least IELTS score must be 6 and if a student doesn’t have a language degree, he/she must complete language programs as a prerequisite of main program. Many colleges offer an opportunity to students to prove their language ability in English or French through an online test.

What is important here is that entering the main program requires having a language degree, so students without a language degree must complete language program. Generally, embassy of Canada doesn’t accept application of Iranian students who don’t have a language degree. Accordingly, we recommend you to take a language test and achieve the required language level if you apply directly from Iran, even if the university you want to apply doesn’t require a language degree for admission.

Canadian college tuition is between $10000 and $20000 in a year. Range of costs depends on college, program and classes. Besides college tuition fees, there are also costs of health insurance and living costs in Canada which you most include in your list of educational costs.

According to rules, there is no age limitation for university or college admission or for getting student visa in Canada. However, it should be noted that officers of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada obviously consider the age in evaluating cases of applicants and their educational program must be justified for officer in relation with their situation. For instance, if an applicant is 50 and wants to study in a Canadian college, it is hard for her/him to justify and convince the officer with her/his documents about that her/his only intention for application is to further education and then come back to her/his country.

Family members of applicant of education in a Canadian college can get a visitor or work (employment) visa and her/his children can benefit free education in Canada.

Gaining admission to further education in Canada, particularly if the applicant wants to get permanent residency after graduation, is a specialized job and we recommend you to benefit our qualified consultors before taking any action.

    Language Courses in Canada

    Language Program in Canada

There are many various language programs in Canada and almost all of the universities and language institution, as well as some colleges have English or French language learning program taking from one month to two years. Programs less than 6 months doesn’t require getting student visa and the applicants can attend these programs with a visitor visa. Unfortunately, currently embassy of Canada doesn’t issue visitor visas for Iranian applicants who want to attend English or French language learning programs.

Even if an admission requires completing language program to enter the main program, embassy of Canada doesn’t accept Iranian students’ apply for student visa.

Therefore, applicants who are directly applying for student visa from Iran are strictly recommended to achieve necessary language qualification required by the university.

Even if the university doesn’t require language score for admission, it is better for you to take a language test.

Languages Canada is public association where all language institutes are membered. All 225 member institutes have valid language programs in Canada.

  • Levels of Education in Canada

    THE EDUCATIONAL DEGREES IN CANADA

    LEVELS OF EDUCATION IN CANADA

    College in Canada

College programs in Canada are generally focused on functional skills and skills related to labor market in Canada. So, these levels have many adherents through Canada. Terms of entering college are easier than those of universities. However, it should be noticed that getting student visa through gaining admission of a Canadian college have the risk of rejecting individuals with higher degree and/or individuals older than average age of undergraduate students. It is important to note that the type of program or college is very important for permanent residence after graduation in Canada.

Bachelor’s Degree or Undergraduate Degree in Canada

Bachelor programs begin after grade 12 of high-school in all provinces across Canada except Quebec where it generally begins after grade 11 of high-school and students can directly enter college or they can first attend a two year pre-university program and then complete a three year bachelor program. Generally, a bachelor program is 3-4 years in Canada.

Gaining admission to a bachelor program in Canada requires having pre-university degree or completing grade 12. It is not necessary to have language degree to attend a bachelor program in Canada. However, if you don’t have a language degree, you must complete language programs at the university.

    Master’s Degree in Canada

Master’s degree generally takes 1-2 years to complete in Canada and is provided as Thesis Based or Course Based programs. Course based programs only include courses during the program and it is not necessary to submit a thesis to complete the program. These programs are generally along with projects and often designed to prepare the students to enter the labor market after graduation. So, they are not suitable for entering Ph.D. programs and higher levels. Course based programs normally take 1-2 years. However, in a thesis based program, the student need to work on a research project with help of her/his supervisor and submit a thesis to get master’s degree. Thesis based master’s programs are generally supported by funds or scholarships provided by university or the supervisor. Thesis based programs takes 2-3 years.

To gain admission to a master’s program, you need to have a bachelor degree with GPA of higher than 14 (may differ in different universities) and have language degree (for example: IELTS score of at least 6 or 5). Moreover, for gaining admission to a thesis based master’s program, you need to have good resume to be successful in finding a good supervisor before applying the university who accept you as her/his student.

    Ph.D. Degree in Canada

Ph.D. degree takes 3-5 years in Canada. For getting this degree, the student must complete the courses of the program and also work on a research project with supervision of her/his supervisor. So, Ph.D. programs require finding a supervisor before applying for the university. Most of Ph.D. projects are sponsored by large companies inside or outside of Canada. Therefore, most of the professors in Ph.D. programs offer funding grants or scholarships for students as their wages. This funds generally cover complete tuition and the sometimes an amount is provided for living costs of the students during their study.

Gaining admission to Ph.D. programs in Canada requires having bachelor and master’s degree with GPA higher than 14 and a language degree (for example: IELTS score of at least 6 or 6.5). However, the main factor to enter this program is your ability to convince the supervisor and having a good resume or CV. Generally, gaining admission to Ph.D. programs in Canada needs a good academic resume (including valid published papers) and good English level.

    Graduate Diploma

These programs are for applicants who have bachelor degree but don’t like to prepare a thesis or take apprenticeship in master’s program. This program includes 30 credits completing of which provides the applicants with a Graduate Diploma. Applicants who wants to get a master’s degree after completing this program can generally receive their master’s degree completing more 15 credits.

You must have a bachelor degree to gain admission to a Diploma Program in Canada. However, it is not necessary to have language degree to gain admission to this program.

    Co-op Program in Canada

Co-op program in Canada refer to some bachelor or master’s programs in Canada during which students need to complete apprenticeship in companies and usually they receive payments against their apprenticeship.

Note: there are also other programs in Canada but as it is difficult or impossible for international students like Iranians to get student visa for these programs, they are not included here.

  • Scholarship in Canada

    Scholarship in Canada

     Scholarship in Canada

Canadian universities and colleges offer a variety of scholarships and funds to international students. So, it is very important for students to know these scholarships. Information related to receive a scholarship is one aspect of such knowledge and competing rivals to receive it, about whom there is no information, is another aspect.  These scholarships are offered based on the educational situation of applicants and they are normally provided by public resources, private companies or universities themselves.

In order to receive a scholarship in Canada, students need to have eligible educational records including high GPA, valid academic papers, and sometimes a proper English or GRE score. Another important point is that any university, department or a professor have limited resources to give funds and only limited number of students can dominate their rivals in receiving these funds.

It is very difficult to get a scholarship for a bachelor program in Canada and if such a scholarship is offered, it will be limited to a discount in tuition fee based on students’ educational conditions and their voluntary educational and non-educational works. It is possible to get scholarships for research based master’s programs but generally universities don’t offer scholarships for course based master’s programs. Students can get a scholarship in doctoral programs if they are eligible and its amount depends on different factors such as fund of university, the money given to the supervisor by research institutes. And the fund she/he assigns for each project and student as well as student’s educational records and competency.

To receive consultancy about getting a scholarship in Canada, send your educational resume to Ramoon to be evaluated by our experts. Please include in your resume detailed educational records including the programs you completed, name of institutes, GPA in each program, and papers you have worked by now as well as English language score and GRE score (if any).
